Ghanaian actor Majid Michel made history on Christmas Day, December 25, when he became the only Ghanaian actor to have picked two awards at this year’s prestigious Ghana Movie Awards held at the Accra International Conference Centre.
Majid retained the Best Actor in Lead Role (English Language) award with the Frank Rajah-directed ‘Somewhere In Africa’.
He also won Best Actor In Supporting Role (English Language) for the same movie.
Majid’s award saved the faces of the ‘old boys’, as apart from him, none of his contemporaries grabbed an award on the night. There was absolutely no show for last year’s Best Actor In Supporting Role winner John Dumelo, Van Vicker, Chris Attoh, and Adjetey Anang, among others.
Also missing in action were the 2010 Favourite Actress Yvonne Nelson, 2011 African Movie Academy Best Actress Ama K. Abebrese, Jackie Appiah, Juliet Ibrahim, Lydia Forson and Yvonne Okoro.
However ace comedian Funny Face made a debut appearance, receiving an award. He picked an award for Best Actor TV Series, for his role in ‘Chorkor Trotro,’ and Best TV series category on behalf of the producer.
Hollywood actress Kimberly Elise also made it as the first Black American actress to pick an award in Ghana. She won Best Actress In Lead Role for the movie ‘Ties That Bind’.
Hollywood standard film ‘The Dead’ actor, Prince David Osei and sexy actress Martha Ankomah were adjudged Favourite Actor and Actress of the year respectively.
Agya Koo also retained Best Actor in Lead (Local Language) with the movie ‘Agenkwah’, while Kwaku Manu beat Mzbel (Single Six), Jasmine Baroudi (Adams Apple), Ama K. Abebrese (Ties That Bind) and James Gardiner (CEO) to win the discovery of the year award.
Nadia Buari was not there to pick her Best Actress In Supporting Role award just as Omotola Jalade, who won Best Actress, African Collaboration, with the film ‘Ties That Bind’.
Ramsey Nouah won Best Actor, African Collaboration, while senior actor Olu Jacobs was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award alongside Super OD, Grace Omaboe, William Addo, Late Sam Loco and Patience Ozokwor
Also what started like a competition between two top female directors, Leila Djansi and Shirley Frimpong Manso at the awards night came to a halt after Leila’s ‘Ties That Bind’ picked 9 awards, including the top most award, Best Picture.
Both Leila Djansi and Shirley Frimpong Manso, topped this year’s awards recipients with nine awards for Leila and five awards for Shirley.
The ceremony which was hosted by TV Newscaster Nana Aba Anamoah and Sport Journalist Nathaniel Attoh, was organised on Christmas Day, December 25 by G.P Limited, in collaboration with Multi TV’s Cine AFRIK Channel and Film Producers Association of Ghana to honour excellence in Ghana’s movie industry and beyond.
It hosted a plethora of stars. Among them were Desmond Elliot, Ramsey Nouah, Segun Arinze, and Olu Jacobs from Nigeria. From Ghana were veteran actor Super OD, Idikoko, Selassie Ibrahim, Yvonne Nelson, Jackie Appiah, Van Vicker, Rose Mensah aka Kyeiwaa, Nana Ama McBrown and others.
Described as a ‘night of tuxedos’, the ceremony began with a red carpet splendour. There were also enthralling performances by Mzbel, R&M group and Nana Boroo.
Local Twi actress Kyeiwaa spiced up the show with her dance steps and English which suffered a lot of grammatical errors, just as Joseph Osei aka Wayosi did during his acceptance speech when he picked the Best Actor In Supporting Role (Local Language).
Founder’s Merit Award, which was to give out two Kia Rio cars to two stars, was postponed to two weeks, after the main awards ceremony. Organisers are yet announce the winners for that category.

In any movie award scheme in the world there are a lot of categories to award industrial players and people who have contributed to the Awards. Out of all the Categories the attention is always on the Best Actor and Actress for lead roles since those awards are classified as the Top most awards. We at NigeriaFilms.Com have decided to watch some of the movies Nominated in the top most (Ghana Movie )awards that we have access to and the ones that we don’t we’ve managed to pass our judgment based on the trailers and the few scenes we have seen.

After going through the criteria for the top awards we think Majid Michel will find his category very easy since he really put up great acting skills for the first time in the history of his movie CareeBut to the female’s side which after enough polls put Jackie on top, yet we don’t believe it is going to be easy for her since Yvonne Okoro also put up a very good performance in the movie titled “Why Marry”

Many critics who helped in coming up with this poll placed Yvonne Okoro as the second possible Actress to win the award if Jackie Appiah doesn’t win it .

We would like to wish good luck to all of the contenders.

You can Glance though the nomination List and make your suggestion

Saturday, November 26 will set another stage for Ghanaians to witness which movies and stakeholders in Ghana’s movie industry have the chance to bag more awards at this year’s event scheduled for December 25.

Top players and stakeholders in the Ghana movie industry will be gathering at the Gold Tulip Hotel in Kumasi on Saturday for the GMA nomination party to release the nominees’ list for this year.
The Ghana Movie Awards, organized by G.P Limited, in collaboration with Multi TV’s Cine AFRIK Channel and Film Producers Association of Ghana, is to honor and recognize talents in Ghana’s improving movie and film industry.

Supported by Lufthansa Airlines, Golden Tulip Hotel (Accra, Kumasi & Lagos), United Airlines and Brussels Airlines, it promises to be exciting and one of a kind. Last year, local Twi movie ‘Ama Ghana’, directed by Frank Gharbin, topped the nominations with 14, ahead of Shirley Frimpong Manso’s ‘A Sting In A Tale’, which got 13 nominations and Leila Djansi’s ‘Sinking Sand’ which got 12.

The director, writer and producer of Sparrow Production, Shirley Frimpong Manso, dominated the main event after she received 6 awards with her two movies, ‘A Sting In A Tale’ and ‘Checkmate’.‘Sting in A Tale’ won a total of 5 awards- Best Directing, Best Original Music, Best Screenplay, Best Score, and Best Cinematography, while ‘Checkmate’ picked the Best Actress In Supporting role award, annexed by Nadia Buari.

Leila Djansi’s ‘Sinking Sands’ bagged four awards- Best Picture, Best Art Direction, Best Wardrobe, Best Movie (West African Collaboration).
‘Ama Ghana’ came close with 3 awards. Actors Majid Michel, John Dumelo, Agya Koo, Jackie Appiah, Nadia Buari, Yvonne Nelson, Juliet Ibrahim, Kyeiwaa and others went home with statuettes.

The Founder’s Merit aAward came in the form of two brand new Zoyte SUV four-wheel drive prize cars, sponsored by Fet Power Limited. One went to popular actor Agya Koo because of his outstanding contribution to the movie industry at a time when it was virtually dying. The other went to four actresses- Jackie Appiah, Juliet Ibrahim, Yvonne Okoro and Roselyn Ngissah for their outstanding performance.

Subsequently, some of the winners were privileged to attend this year’s Cannes Film Festival in France, aside prize packages like phones from rLG Communications. In all, there were 33 movies, with 134 nominations in 25 categories, last year.

This year, over 30 awards will be given in various categories with three new categories, namely Best Cameo, Best Actor and Best Actress TV Series and Best Picture TV Series. The question lingering on the minds of many movie enthusiasts is whether a Twi movie can top the nominations again.

The US premiering of the award-winning war movie, ‘Somewhere is Africa’ made a fantastic stop in Atlanta, where adoring fans of actor, Majid Michel stormed the venue to not only see the movie but also have an opportunity to meet and interact with the movie star. The atmosphere was electric as the crowd waited in anticipation for their star to arrive in a lobby reflecting the jungles of Africa. With 18×10 feet wall banners, 100 feet red carpet, dead body props on the floors to honour innocent victims of war, a concession stand with spicy Suya and wings, it was truly a classic experience. Majid arrived in a black limousine and met the applause of an adoring crowd on the red carpet, shook hands, and occasionally signed autographs. “We did it big in Hollywood, but we decided to raise the bar in Atlanta, the new Mecca of the film industry and to set the standard for our own industry as well,” says Reggie Erawoc of Zebrachild Entertainment, the organizers of the US premieres. The premiere was a major success with a full house, an after party and an African dance with army costumes and a song from the original movie soundtrack.
